Piliated Woodpecker along the trail

For the past year I have attempted to get a good look at the Piliated woodpecker who stopped in one morning to visit our yard. I have seen him on two or three occassions in the area. This past week on a cool and rainy day (thus the bad condition of photos)I heard him out and about. I was out walking my puppy, heard the pounding on a tree, went quickly home, threw the dog in the house and grabbed my camera. These are raw and unedited, but I watched this guy for a good 20 minutes. At some point I got a bit close and he flew to another tree. I was able to watch him and heard his call. I have heard him many times before not realizing this was the call of the piliated woodpecker. I will upload video soon.

Scenery along the Trail - Early Spring

More photos from today. The canopy overhead is very sparse as the new buds start to grow. A recent rainstorm has filled the wetlands. The recent rains also washed out the trail in many locations due to the new sand that has been applied to the trail. I have a real issue with this new covering and hope that it is only an under layer. Eitherway, there are many washouts and divots.

Today's Pictures

I have been out twice today. The first time walking the puppy and the second time on a trip out with camera in hand. The day is absolutely gorgeous and there was a lot of wild life out and about.

First Day

Today was a peaceful walk along. The first week or spring and the area is bustling with wildlife and the greenest green of spring has started to emerge from the undergrowth. Other than the usual birds and squirrel running through the underbrush, the trail was quiet. The skies are a beautiful blue with wisps of clouds and the temperature is wonderful in the 50's. Yesterday evening on a walk with my husband, it was getting dark when we saw both a Great Blue Heron and an owl. It seems whenever I get a nice surprise I do not have my camera with me.

I have approximately 18 months of photos and adventures to catch up on. This is a work in progress but I am looking forward to the "adventure" and sharing with you what is so beautiful to me.

Welcome to my Blog

Welcome!!! I am new to blogging and fairly new to living along the Greensprings Trail. We are approximately 2 miles from Jamestown Island and live along the wetlands that has been called "the beaver pond" and is currently known as Greensprings Interpretive Trail and the Virginia Capital trail. I have been able to capture many photographs of the scenery and the wildlife living along the trail. I am often seen on the trail with my half grown puppy. I wanted to take this opportunity to learn more about the history of the area and to share the beauty that is here. When I refer to "the trail" from now on I am talking about both trails because they merge here and I pass from one to the other often. I would like to add a guest list so if you have visited the trail or live along the trail you may sign in as "Friends of the Trail" and post one or two photos of your visit. I or members of our family have met several people out on a birding expedition, cycling down through our historic areas or just walking their dog. Visitors I have met have been from Austrailia and England.
